Shrewsbury College given satisfactory Ofsted report

Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology has received a satisfactory grade in its recent Ofsted report.

The inspectors’ report for the college, in London Road, was published on Friday revealing that it ‘is a satisfactory college where students achieve as expected’.

Inspectors arrived in the town on November 4 to assess the college. Their document highlighted various positives.

It stated the college offered a wide range of courses to meet the needs and interests of students.

It said: “The development of students’ literacy and numeracy skills is good.”

It also said teaching was satisfactory, stating the best lessons were ‘engaging, enjoyable and memorable’.

Teachers were praised as good role models and students felt very safe at college and ‘generally enjoyed college life’.

It also noted: “However, in too many lessons teaching does not sufficiently challenge students to make the progress of which they are capable. The use of information learning technology is underdeveloped.”

Principal Greg Molan said: “Inspectors noted the very good pastoral and additional support students receive and the quality of the broader student experience.

“The college achieved its best ever results in 2010/11, with all success rates above national averages for young people. We are five percentage points above the national average for the achievement of high grades.

“With all the attention currently being paid to the importance of literacy and numeracy qualifications, we are pleased that inspectors noted these skills are being very effectively developed and that the college has such high success rates.

“Work with employers is an important part of the college’s activity and this was judged to be good.”

Mr Molan added: “Inspectors identified a number of things they would like us to improve such as retention for advanced courses and the proportion of good or outstanding teaching.

“We already have measures in place to do just that.”

No Andrew, not mediocre at all. Satisfactory means it’s hitting the national average but not quite going over and above that.
I do know that shrewsbury college is a very good environment to learn, there may be weaker areas that need to be improved but as a whole it’s a good place.
