Shrewsbury College will shut as staff walk out
Tuesday 22nd November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Shrewsbury’s Sixth Form College will close when staff walk out as part of nationwide strike action, bosses have announced today.
College principal Martin Ward said 1,440 students would be affected by the walk-out next Wednesday.
Nationally, more than two million workers are expected to stay out of the classroom during the day of action co-ordinated by the TUC.
Schools, courts, government offices, job centres, council services and hospitals will also be affected.
Although the college has not said how many staff will walk out, Mr Ward said there would not be enough.
He said: “We know that we won’t be able to run the college as normal so there won’t be students on the site. We are open for staff who are not striking.”
The Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology will be open, although all three of its recognised trade unions – Unison, UCU and ATL – have voted to strike.
A spokeswoman said: “The college intends to stay open as normal and many staff have indicated that they will be coming in and working as normal.”
