Staff and governors at a school in Market Drayton have pledged to build on encouraging findings in its latest Ofsted report, which praised improvements to its quality of teaching and the links with the local community.

Market Drayton Infant School was rated as good in 15 out of 28 areas in the report, published following a visit to the school by Government inspectors last month.

The school’s capacity to excite pupils’ imagination, progress in lessons and polite and courteous behaviour, was recognised.

Inspectors also found an overwhelming majority of parents and carers were supportive of the school, but at the same time, the school was urged to continue improving standards across all ages.

The report said: “This is a satisfactory school and it is improving.

“Significant improvements have been made to the quality of pupils’ learning experiences and their well-being.

“The overwhelming majority of parents and carers who responded to the Ofsted questionnaire are supportive of the school and hold the work of the headteacher and teachers in high regard.

Sam Scott, headteacher, said: “In their report, the Ofsted inspectors recognised that recent improvements to the quality of teaching, along with the exciting and extensive range of activities available to all pupils within the curriculum, mean that more pupils are now making better progress in lessons.

They reported that pupils work hard in lessons and are willing learners.

“They also sustain high levels of concentration and the inspectors noted that the quality of independent learning is impressive.

“We will be working hard over the coming weeks and months to make sure that the better progress our pupils are making in lessons throughout the school, which the inspectors recognised, is built on consistently and carries through to even better progress at the end of Year Two.

“In particular, we will be focusing on the way we monitor pupils’ progress and plan accordingly, as well as the way we organise and plan for learning in the foundation stage.”
