Shropshire’s international college has unveiled plans for a new two-storey student accommodation block which will feature nearly 40 rooms, all boasting en-suites facilities.

Concord College at Acton Burnell, near Shrewsbury, has applied to Shropshire Council for the development which it says will ‘rebalance’ the number of student bedrooms across the site.

The two-storey building will include 39 student bedrooms and a three bedroom staff house, a recreation area with kitchenette, a lift to ground and first floor for disabled access and a wheelchair accessible toilet on the ground floor.

The college is an international school with about 320 students from more than 40 countries with 90 per cent of them boarding either on the 50-acre campus or in the village.

A design and access statement says: “Many of the existing student rooms on the campus have shared bathrooms or are double rooms.

“Over time this accommodation is being converted into single en-suite rooms, but this inevitably leads to a loss in the number of students bedrooms within the existing blocks.

“The current proposals seek to assist in rebalancing the number of student bedrooms across the site.”

Officials have carried out detailed discussion concerning the appearance of the building. They say it will extend from an area of existing woodland which will help limit the impact of the block and provide a ‘soft edge’ to the scheme.
