Tuesday 10th May 2011, 4:55PM BST.
A Shropshire university lecturer has secured a £1.25 million fellowship to train the next generation of horticultural experts.
Dr Jim Monaghan, lecturer in fresh produce at Harper Adams University College in Edgmond, just outside Newport, was awarded the fellowship by the East Malling Trust, Horticulture Development Company and the Horticultural Trades Association.
The groups behind the fellowship say the cash will be used on developing expertise in plant technology, weed control and crop production, as well as expanding research programmes.
Mr Monaghan said he will deliver a series of 10-week placements at Harper Adams aimed at students studying plant science, environmental science, agriculture or horticulture, at an undergraduate level at any institution across the UK.
Students wishing to apply for placements should contact Mr Monaghan on (01952) 820280.
