A Shropshire nursery caring for children of families serving in the RAF has been rated “outstanding” by Government inspectors.

The Acorn Childcare Centre, in the grounds of RAF Cosford, near Albrighton, has received the highest award possible after an inspection by Ofsted for its commitment to childcare.

In her report, Ofsted inspector Becky Johnson said: “Staff are highly motivated and enthusiastic about the service they provide.

“They are well qualified and regularly attend additional training to further their knowledge and expertise.

“The committee, manager and staff are totally committed to continuous improvement and the capacity for this is excellent.”

Jenny Pinson, the centre’s deputy manager said: “The staff are all really pleased and thrilled that we made it to outstanding.

“We have over the years, and the last couple of months, improved our skills here and policy and procedures.

“The centre’s manager has helped us a lot since she started in August.

“This is the first time we have ever got outstanding and hopefully there will be more to come.”

On awarding the nursery top marks, the report praised staff input.

It added: “The nursery is totally child-orientated and staff strive to ensure that children have fun and enjoy all aspects of their time in the setting.

“Babies show obvious delight as they explore the equipment in the sensory room and show wonder and awe as they watch the fish in the bubble tube and the colours change on a disco ball.

“The role play area is also expertly used by staff to help children to cope with changes in their lives.”
