Meeting at Newtown’s Coleg Powys to discuss education shake-up
Monday 4th April 2011, 11:05AM BST.
Hundreds of people are expected to turn out tonight to a public meeting in Newtown’s Coleg Powys to discuss a shake-up of secondary and sixth form education in the county.
Councillor Joy Jones, mayor of Newtown, today urged as many people to attend as possible to make their views known.
Powys County Council is in the process of holding meetings at all 13 secondary schools and Coleg Powys campuses across the county up until May.
Today’s meeting is from 6.30pm.
Controversial plans to radically transform secondary education in Powys, which may see the closure of sixth forms, have already been approved.
Management could also be streamlined and schools merged. Although overall plans have been approved, a decision has not yet been made on exactly what will change.
Councillor Jones said: “Coleg Powys sites could end up becoming the main hub for sixth forms and people need to attend this meeting to make their views known.
“I urged as many people as possible to attend.”
Councillor David Jones, board member for schools, said: “The future of our secondary and post-16 education is of vital importance.
“We urge parents, pupils, governors and the public across the county to get involved and have their say.”
