Letter: It makes sense to federate schools
Friday 11th March 2011, 8:10AM GMT.
The local authority proposes closing the Wakeman School and transferring pupils to Meole Brace.
With numbers depressed by closure rumours from “parties unknown” the Wakeman has 269 places unfilled. Meole has 218 places free, according to the Star report dated February 8.
There are two points worth making here — is it not possible Meole has spaces unfilled as it is literally a couple of hundred yards away from another secondary school?
Wouldn’t it make more sense for those schools to aim for what is being termed “federation” status?
Secondly, pupils currently attending the Wakeman come mostly from parts of the town diametrically opposed to Meole.
Why does the local authority suppose adding miles to their journey to and from school each day would be acceptable?
My daughter has an excellent geography teacher who may be able to gently enlighten cabinet members about such demographics.
He can be found in an excellent school right next to the English Bridge.
