Youngsters at a Shropshire primary school which is facing the axe today gave up part of their half-term holiday to do a publicity shoot and create posters for a campaign to save it.

Pupils at the Stiperstones CE Primary School, near Shrewsbury, took an early morning trip to The Nipstone – one of the tors on the Stiperstones ridge – to record photos and film for a YouTube video to be released on Monday.

Afterwards about 20 pupils went to the school to make posters to be displayed in cars, shops and pubs.

It comes as campaigners in Lydbury North, near Bishop’s Castle, have adopted a new slogan and are planning a series of activities to launch their campaign to save the village’s primary school.

The Lydbury North School Fighting Group met for the first time last night and have adopted the slogan “Lydbury Forever”.

Under proposals by Shropshire Council, eight primary schools are earmarked for closure in the summer of 2012 with the Wakeman secondary in Shrewsbury due to close in July 2013.

Lisa Gray, a parent at Stiperstones, said today the walk up the tor and poster-making had gone “really well”.

“We had a good turnout, everybody has enjoyed themselves. We have all been making posters, we are busy laminating them. Everybody is going to be putting them in their car windows and houses. We have also had banners printed.”

Good for them they need the backing now of their councillor etc and local public and wouldn’t it be nice to see fellow teachers from other local schools and the teachers union helping fellow workers at an at risk school.
