Llanfechain meeting to fight school’s axe plan
Friday 11th February 2011, 6:59PM GMT.
Parents, teachers, staff and governors of a closure-threatened primary school in Powys are being urged to attend a public meeting on Tuesday.
Governors of Llanfechain Church in Wales Primary School said closing it was not an option as it would have a “devastating impact” on the community.
The school was placed on Powys County Council’s closure-threatened list after the authority announced it would be reviewing 11 primary schools, because they had fewer than 30 pupils.
Leigh Kellaway, chairman of governors at Llanfechain Church In Wales School, said that despite the school currently having 32 pupils, the number was expected to go down to 22 by 2013.
“At the moment projected figures show that pupil numbers for the school will fall by 2013 but these can change at any given moment,” he said. “The council is only going by names that have been placed on lists but a lot of parents may not have placed their child on a school list yet.
“The meeting will be an opportunity for the whole community to demonstrate their support for the school now and for the future.
“The closure of the school will impact greatly on our village, which has just opened a shop, staffed and run on a voluntary basis and is thriving.”
The meeting is at the school at 6pm.
