Public meetings over future of Powys schools

Times and dates of public meetings over the future of all 13 secondary schools in Powys have been released by council bosses seeking public opinion.

Powys County Council will be holding the consultation meetings at all secondary schools and Coleg Powys campuses across the county up until April.

A consultation document with a questionnaire has also been produced and is now available on the council’s website. Copies will also be sent out to parents and guardians.

The council has revealed plans to radically transform secondary education in Powys, which could result in the closure of some sixth forms. The proposals include the possibility of merging some sixth forms and relocating others to Coleg Powys sites.

People are now being urged to have their say and attend the meetings, which will all take place at 6.30pm on the following dates: Brecon High School on February 7; Llanfair Caereinion High School at the leisure centre on February 16; Llanfyllin High School on February 17; Welshpool High School at Theatr Clera on March 7; Llanidloes High School at the community centre on March 10; Builth Wells High School on March 16; John Beddoes High School on March 23; Newtown High School on March 24; Coleg Powys in Llandrindod Wells on March 28; Llandrindod Wells High School on March 30; Coleg Powys in Newtown on April 4; and Ysgol Bro Ddyfi in Machynlleth on April 7.

Councillor David Jones, Powys County Council board member for schools, said: “The future of our secondary and post-16 education is of vital importance.

“We urge parents, pupils, governors and the public across the county to get involved and have their say on the issue.”
