A review into the future of six Welsh language primary schools in Powys has started, council bosses said today.

Powys County Council said a group had now been set up to look at how primary school education should be delivered through the medium of Welsh and will finish it’s review by next June.

The schools are Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon in Trefeglwys, Ysgol Carno and Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd in Newtown, Ardwyn Nursery and Infants School in Welshpool, Ysgol Maesydre in Welshpool and Ysgol Rhiw Bechan in Tregynon.

The review forms part of the Schools Modernisation Programme, aimed at assisting the authority in making all its schools fit for purpose.

Headteachers and governing bodies of all six Welsh medium schools in the area, together with a number of county councillors will sit on the group.

The group has been called Severn Valley Area Project Board .

Questionnaires have been sent out to parents of all children in the county born between September 1, 2007, and August 31, 2008.

The deadline for returned surveys is December 15.
