Shrewsbury’s Greenfields Primary School reopens
Tuesday 5th October 2010, 12:22PM BST.
A Shrewsbury primary school, which had to close its doors yesterday after heavy rain caused a ceiling to collapse, reopened today.
Greenfields Primary School, in Hemsworth Way, was shut following a weekend of torrential downpours.
Andrew Morris, headteacher of the school, said he had arrived yesterday to find part of the ceiling had collapsed between an existing building and an extension under construction.
Mr Morris today said: “We’re back to normal today.
“We put an announcement on the radio and parents have been phoning in. Word has got around quickly.”
He added: “The builders have been very good – it was the original building that was at fault.
“They’ve repaired the damage and checked over the site and Shropshire Council’s premises and planning officers have been down to check it out.”
He said there would be no financial cost to the school as a result of the damage.
The school was one of a number of places in Shropshire affected because of the weather.
Homes were flooded, roads suffered surface water flooding and several events across the county had to be cancelled.
Tesco Extra in Telford was also unable to open for an hour on Sunday because of a problem with flooding near its entrance.
