Views split on £3m Ashford Carbonell school plan

Controversial plans to build a £3 million primary school in the heart of the south Shropshire countryside will come under scrutiny at the end of the month.
Planners will hear more details on the application to build a school at the site in Ashford Carbonell after the village school merged with a school in Caynham in 2009 to create the Bishop Hooper School.
All the children are currently attending school at the Caynham site but it is hoped that they will be able to move to the new school in the next few years.
The plans are for a four-class primary school along with provision for the privately run nursery Butterflies.
They also include provision for a 17-space staff and visitor car park, two disabled bays and a 34-space visitors’ drop-off and pick-up point with coach parking.
An all-weather multi-games area is also included in the plan.
But the application for the school has led to letters of objection from residents.
Many believe it will increase traffic in the village as children are bussed in from the surrounding areas.
Campaigners fighting the proposal have taken their case to the Government although they are yet to hear back.
They claim the school will be built on a greenfield site in a conservation area but also believe only a small number of children from the area will actually attend.
The objectors added that they believe the school is “unnecessary” and a “waste of money”.
But the recommendation within the application states: “Although this development of a new rural school at this location is not ideal from a highway and transportation perspective, the applicants have adequately addressed all the highway considerations.
“Therefore, it is considered that on balance, subject to the imposition of the following planning conditions, an objection on highway grounds could not be sustained for this proposal.”
Shropshire Council has also received 16 letters in favour of the project.
Supporters believe that the proposal benefits the community by providing a place where children can be educated in a rural environment.
The application is set to go before members of the south planning committee.
There meeting will take place at Ludlow Football Club in Ludlow on August 31 from 2pm.
