GCSE results delight for Shropshire pupils

Students in Shropshire were celebrating today after another record-breaking year for GCSE results.
Nationally nearly seven in 10 students got at least a C grade as the pass rate rose for the 23rd year in a row. In Telford, the Sutherland Business and Enterprise College was one of many celebrating best-ever exam results.

The school in Gibbons Road, Trench, had 97 per cent of students getting five GCSE passes at grade C or above.
Headteacher Steve Wall said the results were “outstanding”. “We are absolutely delighted for all of our young people who have achieved such excellent results,” he added.
At Adams Grammar School, in Newport, teenagers were jumping for joy after every one of the 106 sitting exams passed at least five GCSEs at grade C or above.
Star performers were Matthew Broomfield and Oliver Plexton, who both got 11 A*.
Eight pupils at Shrewsbury School got 10 A* when results were released today. Martin Cropper, headteacher at the independent school, said overall it was among their best results in recent years.
Best ever results were also posted at The Marches School and Technology College in Oswestry, where 78 per cent of students passed five GCSEs or more at C or above, while 69 per cent got five including Maths and English.
But at Oswestry School, teenagers face an anxious wait.
Headteacher Mr Douglas Robb said pupils had been told they would be getting results on Thursday, traditionally results day, before hearing the Government brought it forward.
Meanwhile, in the north of the county, Thomas Adams School in Wem was another announcing a best-ever set of results with 83 per cent of students getting five or more GCSEs from A* to C.
Results also improved at Ludlow School for the sixth year out of the last seven, headteacher Phil Poulton said today.
Shropshire councillor Aggie Caesar-Homden, cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “Our expectation and initial indications are that Shropshire’s results will be very good and that 2010 will be another excellent year.
Meanwhile, students in Powys were celebrating after another record-breaking year for GCSE results at scores of schools and colleges across the county.
At Llanfyllin High School students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate with 93.4 per cent gaining five or more A* to C grades. Headteacher Carl Mincher said 41 per cent of grades achieved were at A* and A.
Newtown High School was celebrating its best ever success rates, with more than 76 per cent of pupils achieving five A* to C grades. Stephen Waldron, deputy head teacher, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our results which are our best ever.
“These results represent an increase of 123 per cent since 2004 and follow on from record A-level results released last week.”
Lis Puw, headteacher at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi, Machynlleth, said 63.4 per cent of pupils got five A* to C grades and 100 per cent got A* to G.
Carol Morgans, headteacher of Llandrindod Wells High School, said 70 per cent of pupils got five A* to C grades, while 100 per cent got A* to G.
Darren Davies, headteacher at Llanidloes High School, said 81 per cent of pupils got five or more A* to C grades.
He said: “We are delighted by this year’s results, which are in excess of the ambitious targets we set ourselves each year.”
At Caereinion High School, in Llanfair Caereinion, students achieved a 99.9 per cent success rate.
Headteacher David Evans said 78.3 per cent of pupils got A* to C grades.
John Beddoes High School in Presteigne achieved a 61 per cent pass rate at A* to C grades.
At Welshpool High School, headteacher Jim Toal said 75 per cent of pupils had gained A*to C grades and students had achieved a 97 per cent pass rate.
