School celebrates its 125th anniversary

One of Shropshire’s top schools is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a series of events including an “extravaganza” next month to which it hopes to attract many former pupils.
Shrewsbury High School is staging the event on June 26 in the school grounds at Town Walls. It is aimed at past and present pupils and anyone who is connected with the school.
Ben Jason, a spokesman for the school, said the it would be a fun-packed day for all the “school family”, from 11am to 5pm, with food, charity stalls and displays.
There would also be a School versus Old Girls netball match.
“Past pupils, present pupils and their families are welcome to bring a picnic hamper and enjoy the celebrations,” said Mr Jason.
“There’s also a special alumnae event including a luncheon and tea, and tours of the school.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for old girls of all ages to get together.”
Tickets for this alumnae event, which forms part of the June 26 celebration, cost £18.50 and need to booked in advance.
Jubilee
Shrewsbury High School was opened by the Girls’ Day School Trust in May 1885, moving to its present location at Town Walls 10 years later.
Expanding rapidly, by 1935 the school’s golden jubilee was marked by the building of a library, a gift from staff and past and present pupils.
The prep department also grew and in 1959 moved to its own site in Kennedy Road, which is now the pre-prep. The school continued to flourish with the most recent development being the opening of Shrewsbury High Prep at Kingsland Grange in 2008. Today the school has 770 pupils.
Headteacher Marilyn Cass has been delighted at the response from former pupils, but wants to make sure no-one misses out.
“We have old girls of all ages coming to our special alumnae event, from around the country,” she said.
“Some left 65 years ago, others as recently as 1992.
“Yet we know many who attended Shrewsbury High School aren’t aware of our reunion party, so we would like everyone to get in touch with us.”
Full details of the event are on the school’s website – www.shrewsburyhigh.gdst.net – and tickets for the alumnae event can be booked with Deborah Frost on 01743 494038 or d.frost@shr.gdst.net
