Huts found use as village halls

Here we have the village hall at Church Stoke. The village name incidentally is written as two words on this postcard, but you often see it written as Churchstoke too.

Countryside scene captured

This is the essence of the countryside, isn’t it? This postcard is labelled simply “Knowbury road” and we are looking up the lane towards Knowbury Church, which is near Ludlow.

New homes rising from rubble

It’s April 1, so naturally we shall play a dirty trick on you in this spot. And that dirty trick is to publish a photo of inferior quality . . .

Are group enjoying seaside break?

Had the weather over Easter been better, a lot more folk would have taken the chance of an Easter break away – perhaps a day at the sea.

Press gang to party on

A social tradition harking back to a golden age of journalism, the Press Ball, is set to be revived. Toby Neal takes a nostalgic look back to an ever-popular event.

Sergeant missed her big moment

Here’s another of those photos where we’ve only got a poor quality copy. This was the royal visit by Princess Elizabeth, later the Queen, to Shrewsbury Castle in 1949.

Matron was last at hospital

A sad 40th anniversary has recently passed largely unnoticed. On February 26, 1968, a fire at Shelton Hospital, Shrewsbury, killed 24 patients.

Camera call for merchant staff

Meet the staff of ‘Cook Provision Merchant’ on the corner of New Street, Wellington. This is another picture loaned to us by Peter Wyatt, of Sutton Heights, whose uncle Percy Jones is on the left.

Angling society on a day out

If you’re from Dawley and of a certain age, you might recognise one or two of these people.

Snapshot of days as chauffeur

This photo is in a family album in the ownership of Mrs Grace Edwards of Wellington.

Memories of county’s buses

A feature the other day in the Shropshire Star revived many memories of old Sentinel buses from yesteryear, so here’s another chance for a nostalgic wallow for those who can remember them.

Where was picture was taken?

This picture is in an album in the ownership of Mrs Grace Edwards of Wellington, and shows her father Stan Davies who was a GPO engineer.
