Making sense of cell counts
Monday 22nd August 2011, 4:51PM BST.
Peter and Rob Lawley of Manor House Farm, Bagnall, Stoke-on-Trent, were the winners of a recent competition carried in The Farmer to win a Cellcense system.
Peter and Rob Lawley run a 100 cow flying herd yielding 6,500 litres with milk currently sold to Tesco’s. The Cellcense system was recently fitted following their prize draw win. Early benefits seen include:
1. Freshly calved cows’ cell count checked prior to going into the bulk tank with high cell count milk being diverted and cows monitored.
2. High cell count cows on antibiotics are tested with cellsense to check that treatment has worked. Veterinary advice is then sort as to the next best step.
3. Any milk from any new cases picked up is diverted from the bulk tank before it leaves the jar.
Peter and Rob have had a concerted effort to reduce cell counts at Manor House Farm over the last few months and this has led to cell counts dropping from 250,000 to 190,000.
Promar milking systems currently have a demo Cellsense system available for a two-week trial. If you are interested in a trial call Richard Hooson on 07971 119121.
