Big curry cook-off
Thursday 21st July 2011, 12:44PM BST.
Saturday shoppers will have their taste buds tickled at the Shrewsbury Big Curry this Saturday, all in aid of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.
The Shrewsbury Big Curry is taking place in The Square on Saturday 23 July from 11am – 4pm. The day will be a ‘curry cook-off’ between the Army chefs from 143 (West Midlands) Brigade and TASTE kitchen chef, Ed Warren, based at the Shropshire Food Enterprise Centre on Battlefield Enterprise Park. Who will win? You decide!
As well as deciding on their favourite dish, people will also have to choose whether they prefer wine or local beer with their curry. Tanners Wine Merchants will be on hand serving drinks including local tipples Shropshire Gold from Salopian Brewery and Clerics Cure from Three Tuns Brewery.
This is the first year Shrewsbury has taken part in The Big Curry events programme, which is in its fifth year, and has been organised by Nick Chavasse, Managing Director of Shrewsbury business NRG Direct Mail Ltd, a former Major in the British Army and HEART of ENGLAND fine foods (HEFF).
For a £5 donation to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity people will get two portions of curry, one prepared by the TASTE kitchen chef and another by the Army chefs, and then people will vote for their favourite. The TASTE kitchen chef will be using locally sourced ingredients and the Army chef will be using a recipe popular with soldiers. The winning chef will be announced at the end of the day. There will also be music throughout the day and a variety of stands.
The Big Curry is a crucial fundraising event for The Soldiers’ Charity which gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families.
In 2010 The Soldiers’ Charity was able to give £76,132.50 to support 72 different cases including soldiers and their families in Shropshire.
