Urgent action required for higher level stewardship

Monday 6th June 2011, 2:08PM BST.

Farmers in Shropshire who are interested in Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) but have not yet got an agreement, should take urgent action now or they could miss out.

Shropshire is being used as a pilot project to test run the new three-tier approach to the application process.

“Natural England has already produced a draft ‘pipeline’ of holdings in Shropshire which they consider a priority to be included in HLS,” says Mandy Seedhouse, environment adviser with Berrys at Shrewsbury.

“They have also asked for input from registered agent’s such as Berrys to ensure that they do not miss out on any potential schemes.  To be considered for an agreement a holding has to be included on Natural England’s ‘pipeline’.”

The provisional deadline for registering potential holdings is June 10 so Natural England can begin finalising the Shropshire ‘pipeline’ by the end of June.

As a registered agent with Natural England, Berrys can put a holding forward for inclusion.

“To ensure you don’t miss out please call to arrange a free initial meeting before 10 June.  If the holding is suitable Berrys can then submit a request for inclusion on the ‘pipeline’,” Mandy added.
