Ed follows in father's footsteps

Shropshire caterer Ed Potter is following in his father's footsteps in becoming  chairman of the Young Farmers' clubs in Shropshire.

Ed, aged 26, is a member of Dorrington YFC and runs his own business, Oak Apple Catering, at Frodesley near Shrewsbury, but in between cooking delicious food still finds time for Young Farmers.

He took over the role of chairman from Stephen Evans of Whittington and Oswestry YFC, in a ceremony at Shropshire Federation of Young Farmers Club's annual meeting at the Lord Hill Hotel, Shrewsbury last month. In the audience on Saturday was Ed's father Alan who was county chairman in 1983.

Ed has been a member of Young Farmers since he was 12 and has taken part in nearly every competition Young Farmers has to offer. Over the years he has won every national YFC stockjudging class but says his favourite competition is public speaking.

Armed with some fantastic ideas for SFYFC's near 1,000 members, including a 10-day trip around Europe, 2016 is already set for great things. With the success of the past year this is no mean feat, with higher than ever membership numbers and sponsors, the past year has seen a fantastic amount of support.

Shropshire YFC now has five main sponsors, with Alltech E-CO2 joining Shropshire-based companies Pickstock Telford, Hatchers Solicitors, Shropshire Farm Vets and Turners Furniture.

After a vote from the 18 clubs within Shropshire, Ed's vice was decided and it was announced that Rebecca Green, 24, from Brown Clee would be vice-chairman.

The evening also saw the presentation of awards and trophies to members from across the county, along with reports from volunteer committee chairmen on the successes of SFYFC.

Stephen Evans, the 2015 county chairman, awarded a number of trophies to the members who shone, along with a very special award from past member James Davies, who sadly passed away in 2013 after a battle with cancer.

The James Davies Memorial Tankard is presented to the most social member of Shropshire YFC, and perfectly sums up what James brought to the county. This year, Stephen chose Whitchurch member William Allen, thanking him for his dedication over the past 12 months. The trophy for the most money raised, which this year was a fantastic £9,212, went to Brown Clee YFC.
