Beef farmers are invited to visit 2012 Farmers Weekly Beef Farmer of the Year winner, James Evans for a farm walk looking in particular at beef cow fertility and heat detection.

The business has two suckler herds over two units in Shropshire, a 180-cow Spring calving herd and a 130-cow Autumn calving herd.

Since switching to the Stabiliser breed back in 2007, James has since then put a heavy emphasis on cow and bull fertility. All bulls are semen tested, artificial insemination is used as are heat detection collars and he is part of SAC's health scheme as a high health herd.

This focus on fertility has meant both herds are now achieving a weaning rate consistently above 95% of cows put to the bull.

During the farm walk we will hear about his experiences first hand, including why he was drawn to AI, and the theory versus the reality. We will also learn about the use of heat detection collars and the results to date, what conception rates he has been achieving and how it has helped identify non cycling cows.

All are welcome to attend. The farm walk is taking place between 11am-3pm on Wednesday September 30 at Walcot Farm, Lydbury North, Shropshire.
