Shropshire firms on the fast track to success

Friday 3rd February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.

Two companies from Shropshire have been named in a new list of the fastest-growing businesses in Britain.

Electrical products manufacturer Nexus Industries and cling film maker Wrap Film Systems – both from Telford – are among 14 Midlands companies to make it into the sixth annual Sunday Times Deloitte Buyout Track 100 league table. Tyrells Potato Crisps is also on the list.

The firm, from just over the south Shropshire border in Leominster, is in the table of pri- vate companies with the fastest growing profits over the last two years.

To qualify for inclusion, companies had to be independent, non-stock market listed, and be at least 20 per cent owned by a private equity fund.

Nexus Industries, which employs 372 staff and is based at Stafford Park, has seen its profits grow by an average of 77 per cent over the past two years, to £4.53 million.

Wrap Film Systems of Hortonwood, which has 287 staff, recorded profit growth of more than 34 per cent to £4.72 million, and Tyrrells’ profits rose 24.5 per cent.

The full findings will be published in a Sunday Tim- es supplement this weekend, and on www.fasttrack.co.uk

It will reveal that the 100 companies have grown their profits by an average 51 per cent a year, to combined profits of £1.3 billion.

The top company in the Midlands is discount bookseller The Works, based in Sutton Coldfield, which was bought out of administration three years ago by chief executive Anthony Solomon and turnaround specialists Endless, and has seen profits grow 87 per cent a year, to £10.3 million.

Darren Boocock, head of corporate finance for the Midlands region at Deloitte, said: “Despite the many challenges facing the UK economy, it is very pleasing to see so many successful private-equity-backed businesses in the Midlands.

“It is clear that strong management teams supported by private-equity investors can deliver above average performance.”
