Delay for Shrewsbury Tesco bid to extend
Friday 30th December 2011, 10:58AM GMT.
Controversial plans to extend Shrewsbury’s Tesco Extra store have been delayed until February, because the supermarket giant failed to address major issues of overtrading.
Shropshire Council planning chiefs have written to Tesco’s agents, saying that issues raised about their proposed extension at the store on Battlefield Road have still not been clarified, despite previous requests.
The application, they warn, is now unlikely to be heard at committee until the end of February.
One key issue remaining unresolved is details over the planned comparison and convenience split for the new extension.
The council has also requested further clarification on overtrading, which is central to Tesco’s argument that an expansion is needed to cater for the store’s current strong trading performance.

Isn’t the traffic up that end of town already a nightmare since the opening of the “wonderful” Tesco. Surely we already have enough supermarkets surrounding Shrewsbury without increasing their size? They already hold us to ransom with their prices so please don’t give them the opportunity to make matters worse!!!

The constantly full carpark suggests otherwise.

having worked at the tesco store up until recently and being told by management that there was no extra hours due to budget . i find it amazing that they are still pushing ahead with the idea when clearly the money is not there to fund it

Shame the council just didnt throw the plan out, there no need for a extension to the store, look at the way the tried to pull the wool over the council eyes when they built the store oversized and got away with it, anyone else would of had to have it knocked down.
Simple answer is to say no to them, and stand up to them. and save the high street shops.
Soon each town will be the same, just on big tesco shed selling everythink at over inflated prices.

As Paul said, the massive store in Wrexham was also cutting back staff hours over the last few weeks, who were then moaning to the frustrated customers having to queue for ages when only a few tills were open. As a business they have recently published the worst figures for years and the reason is because most people are sick of their megalomaniac approach to life and rightly choosing to shop elsewhere. What most people want is plenty of choice and to see their heritage town centre protected so we don’t all have to shop in sole less ugly tin sheds. This plan should be thrown out, they haven’t made any real case for expansion, its all about trying to increase their market share and take money from other retailers who when they close down it gives Tesco the chance to put their prices up. Also when you look at the planning application on the council website they have supplied their ‘fan club’ members with a standard letter to send in to council planners to support the application! How desperate are they as a business?

is the council finally showing some “cahunas” and standing up to the might of tesco?
i suspect they are too broke now for the legal battle but they should make a stand it will take about two millios pounds away from the high street, by my calculation that translates the the turn over of about 20 small shops and the profits of about 40-50 so that would devastate the town

I think you mean “cojones”.

I am glad to see the council has delayed the decision on the expansion of tesco. I work for Morrisons in Shrewsbury and over the past few months the store has been transformed by using the wasted space more effectively no major expansion was needed and delays to customers was minimal, I think rather than expand, tesco should look at their own wasted space and use that to its highest potential, as for the overtrading issue this is just a ploy to hoodwink the council, tesco is no busier than morrisons and is twice the size.

Tesco is a dreadful place. All national supermarkets are a threat to our traditional way of life and Tesco is by far the worst. Hate it.

personally i think this part of town is over developed and not suited for pedestrians, its like a USA style mall, all indoors and car orientated, its horrible
much rather go for british style town centres and outdoor markets and cobbled streets even if its raining i’d always go into town

we must fight them, on the beaches, in the courts and the town halls etc
