New twist in Shropshire Chamber of Commerce row

The row over the leadership of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce has taken a new twist after one of the company’s patrons withdrew its backing.

In a strongly-worded letter criticising the leadership of the body, Graham Wynn, chairman of driver education body the TTC Group, informed the board he would be pulling out of the Chamber patronage scheme.

He said: “Here at TTC we have become increasingly concerned at the lack of transparency in some of the decisions being made. Indeed it feels like the Chamber is being run in a very autocratic style as a private members’ club rather than an open membership organisation.”

The chamber was rocked last week after vice president Nick Chavasse quit the board, and gave up the next presidency of the chamber, in a row over the powers available to him.

Does the Chamber actually provide a worthwhile service to its members or indeed any business? Its just another glorified network club amongst so many others!

Former Shropshire Council Officer in reply to your message I can only assume that your position within the local authority was not one that came into contact with Shropshire Chamber. Shropshire Chamber represents over 760 businesses and this number continues to grow on a monthly basis. The actual number of active networkers is at most 20%. The remaining 80% obviously find benefit from the services which our local Chamber offer. I suggest that you visit http://www.shropshire-chamber.co.uk and educate yourself on the good work provided by our local Chamber.

A decision such as this does not come easy to a successful businessman like Graham Wynn. He is a hard working business professional and a decision will have been made based on fact.
We should all follow Grahams lead and endeavour to create a Chamber of Commerce to support Shropshire Businesses. Remember when the honorable Mike Lowe led the chamber? Those were the days it supported business and offered real benefits and was led by directors with integrity.
