Boost for jobs as Aldi’s Bridgnorth store bid allowed

Twenty jobs are to be created with the opening of a discount supermarket in Bridgnorth.

The Aldi store is due to be built on the former Bridgnorth College site in Stourbridge Road by Easter 2013.

An Aldi spokesman said: “The store is set to generate 20 jobs in addition to those created for the construction of the store.”

Town mayor Connie Baines said: “If it creates work and enables the people around there to shop locally I think it’s a good idea.”

The application was submitted to Shropshire Council in collaboration with Persimmon Homes, which wants to build homes on the remainder of the land. It was approved in June along with plans for another supermarket at the nearby Chartwell Business Park.

Bridgnorth Civic Society had objected to both applications but councillors backed them after hearing that the stores would encourage more people to shop in the area.
