Jobs axe fear at Doncasters Group

Staff at a Shropshire aeronautical factory have been told more than 40 jobs could be axed – just days before Christmas.

Doncasters Group Ltd today confirmed it was considering the loss of up to 42 jobs at Doncasters Aerospace Components in Whitchurch Road, Shrewsbury.

Employees have been informed and a consultation period, involving representatives from the Unite union, has begun.

It comes just months after the firm axed 18 jobs at the site.

Today Damon Harvie, general manager at Doncasters Aerospace Components, said: “Trading conditions in the global aerospace and industrial gas turbine markets continue to be challenging.

“Following a review of forecasts for 2011, it’s clear that, while we remain optimistic about mid-to-long term growth opportunities, it is not possible to maintain current employment levels.

“Where possible, we will look to make reductions through voluntary redundancies and will do all we can to support employees during the process.”

A spokeswoman from the Unite union today said they understood that chiefs at Doncasters were in talks with other firms about a possible takeover of part of the business which could stave off job cuts.

She said: “We understand that there are three parties who are interested in taking on part of the business, which could mean that jobs are saved. We hope to return in the new year to good news.”

Shropshire Councillor Vernon Bushell, who represents the Harlescott ward where the factory is, said the loss of jobs would be “disastrous”.

He said: “I’m very sad to hear the news, I think it’s awful. The time of year is bad enough but the loss of jobs will be disastrous. Doncasters is very important to the area, it’s a big business.

“This not only affects the families of those who have lost their jobs it will also affect the local economy.

“I know one or two people involved with the business and will be contacting them.”

Doncasters is a leading international manufacturer of engineering components.
