Decision on Shrewsbury Tesco space to be made

A final decision on retrospective plans by supermarket giant Tesco to increase the amount of space it uses for non-grocery goods at its Shrewsbury “Extra” store could be made next month.

The application for the company’s Battlefield store is due go before Shropshire Council’s strategic planning committee on October 22, the authority said today.

This month the council’s central planning committee rejected the plan on the grounds it conflicted with two local policies and one central government policy concerning planning.

But Susan Bates, council solicitor, said it would have to be referred to the strategic planning co-mmittee as it went against of-ficer recommendations and there was a risk on appeal it may not be defendable.

Tesco lodged the proposals for the store after admitting it had “inadvertently” breached its planning consent at the site after it was built in 2007. It has been using 624 sq m over the permitted figure. The store’s application is for a condition to be amended to allow it to have 4,789 sq m of sales floorspace including 2,071 sq m for non-grocery goods.

Earlier this month Dr Maxwell Winchester, a Shropshire councillor, called for the unitary council to take enforcement action against Tesco for the breach.

Today he said: “This has been going on nearly 12 mo-nths now and I think it’s about time this was resolved.”

Where does the ‘decision’ come into it? It’s a flagrant breach of planning application. You and I would be hauled over the coals for less. Do I smell bluster and retreat on the wind?

No we wouldn’t, like every other planning ‘oversight’ we’d have been given an amount of time to put things as they were or face consequences. We certainly wouldn’t have had it plastered all over the local press several times..
