So, Councillor Carson is sad because the chamber of commerce is short of members. Maybe the reason is that there are far fewer businesses than there were years ago. Many small retailers have been forced to close due to high rent and rates and the competition from the likes of Tesco etc. in nearby towns. The economic climate is not helpful, who can blame people for traveling 10 miles to do a one stop weekly shop and save a significant sum in the process. It’s called progress Peggy, the age of the small thriving market town is long gone and it will not be returning any time soon. It is 10 years since I left Wem and even then it was rapidly turning into a dormitory town for Shrewsbury, Telford and even Whitchurch and I can only assume that the problem has got worse since then. We used to use cars with solid tyres but we moved on, maybe Wem council should do the same.
