Approval likely for scheme by Tesco
Thursday 26th August 2010, 12:57PM BST.
Retrospective plans by supermarket giant Tesco to increase the amount of space it uses for non-grocery goods at its Shrewsbury Extra store look set to be approved – despite the company flouting planning rules.
Tesco submitted fresh plans for the space used in its store in Battlefield after admitting it had “inadvertently” breached its planning consent at the site since it was built in 2007.
But despite figures collated by campaigners who say there has been a loss of 46 non-grocery stores in Shrewsbury town centre in just over two years – Shropshire Council officers are recommending Tesco’s retrospective plans for approval.
Councillors are due to discuss the matter at a meeting next Thursday.
A report to the meeting says: “It is considered that the proposal does not conflict with national and local retail planning policies and that the proposed variation of condition is acceptable.
“The store has been trading in breach of the condition with the additional floorspace since 2007 and, although this cannot be condoned, it is considered that there is no evidence of significant adverse impact on the town centre or other centres as a result.”
The new application by Tesco is to vary a condition of consent imposed by the Secretary of State.

With respect, “approval is not likely” on the basis of council planning officers’ recommendation to approve. Shropshire Council’s planning committees have an excellent reputation in making independent decisions and have overturned officer’s recommendations for approval several times recently.

outrageous
council is scared too soft should stand up to these big firms and turn down this kind of thing

When will councillors start listening to and taking campaigners seriously, and to make it worse, they knew that tesco had breached planning conditions, but still take no action.
Just another example of tesco riding rough shot over the planning reg`s,and shropshire planning department giving in.

Isn’t it about time that some people woke up and smelled the coffee? Agreed, Tesco were in the wrong and should be punished, not rewarded, but to blame them for the demise of town centre shops is somewhat laughable – one reason the town centre fails, in my humble opinion, is accessibility – bus services are poor and overpriced, the road system is more often than not gridlocked and parking is a joke, and overpriced. Tesco, and other out-of-town premises, offer a convenient and cost effective alternative – I would prefer to shop in the town centre, with much more choice, but quite frankly the thought of doing this often almost brings me to my knees with trepidation

bit late to the party here, but 46 shops close in last two years. if i’m not mistaken are we not in a recession. where 1 in 8 shops will be empty. how is this tesco’s fault? is it not the fault of the greedy bankers who Ducked up the whole system in the first place?
oh that’s right it’s not is it. lets just blame tesco and no one else! Asda don’t exsit and certainly won’t be opening a asda home living on the netto site will they? oh wait they will, and what will they sell? oh yeah thats also right they sell NON-FOOD items.
