Shropshire baker turns down Harvey Nichols’ offer

An entrepreneurial Telford confectioner who launched a successful cupcake business is being wooed by some of the nation’s top stores after creating a new sweet treat.
Emma Handley has been asked to supply Cake Pops to Harvey Nichols, in London – but has turned down the lucrative offer.
Mrs Handley, from Lightmoor, started making Cake Pops following a recent trip to America, where the delicious miniature iced cakes are all the rage.
She said: “Cake pops are taking over from cupcakes in America. They are pretty, satisfying cakes on lollipop sticks in a hard iced casing. Each one is individually decorated and they’re very popular.
“Cup cakes really started to take off in America a few years ago and suddenly they were everywhere. Cake pops are the latest fashion and people can expect them to take off really soon.”
Mrs Handley added that she had been contacted by top people’s store Harvey Nichols after one of its buyers found details for cake pops on her website, at www.facebook.com/TrulyScrumptiousCupcakes
She said: “They got in touch and inquired whether I would be able to supply their flagship store in London. It was a very flattering offer but, unfortunately, my business isn’t really cut out for that type of work.
“I tend to supply weddings, parties, special occasions and other events for private clients in Shropshire, so I had to decline.”
Mrs Handley said the cake pops were proving a winner at summer weddings in the county.
She added: “They are exceptionally popular and people are ordering them instead of traditional wedding favours. I’m being asked to bake and ice dozens and dozens of cake pops so that brides and grooms can give them to their guests.
“While I had to turn down the department store in London, I am still taking local bookings, so people can just get in touch.”

No it’s not news. It does seem that any food business gets masses of coverage even though real employers don’t.
