Traders claim that red tape ‘stifling’ Shrewsbury
Saturday 31st July 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Business leaders have condemned council red tape, claiming that it is “stifling” Shrewsbury’s economy. The comments come from Peter Bettis, chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber.
He criticised Shropshire Council after members rejected plans for a seating area and catering unit outside the Old Market Hall.
The rejection followed months of delays for businessman Ashley Davies, who said he struggled with bureaucracy when he tried to introduce outdoor seating at his wine bar, Ashleys.
Mr Bettis said: “On behalf of the Shrewsbury Business Chamber, I am appalled at the way in which the two cafe initiatives have been stifled. We are trying to encourage the town’s evening economy and these two initiatives would fill a gap in a niche market.
“I am concerned that the officers are not in tune with the ethos of tourism within the town centre and they appear to be actively discouraging the creation of wealth by not using the town as a resource.”
Earlier this month Mr Davies claimed businesses in Shrewsbury were being put off from introducing a cafe culture by red tape.
Shropshire Council had vowed to wipe out bureaucracy to make it easier for cafes and restaurants to put tables and chairs outside their premises.
Andy Goldsmith, assistant director for public protection from Shropshire Council, said at the time council officers were looking at ways in which they could streamline the process for businesses seeking to provide pavement cafes without deregulating it.
