Workers at GKN vote on pay deal

More than 500 workers at GKN Sankey in Telford were today voting on whether to accept a revised pay deal.

Staff were previously offered a two per cent pay rise but that has been rejected and staff voted for strike action, or action short of a strike, on June 7.

However, the Unite union has been in negotiations with chiefs at GKN Sankey and today the company offered a two per cent rise with a cash lump sum.

The company told workers it could not increase on the two per cent, but could afford a lump sum if it makes efficiency savings.

Stefan Blasczyk, Unite regional officer, said he remained hopeful the offer would be acceptable to staff, but if not there would be a ban on overtime which would come into effect on Thursday.

Mr Blasczyk said: “Unite remains optimistic that we can reach an agreement with the employer. If the offer is not accepted by members then there will be a ban on overtime, which is disappointing. Any industrial action will be a last resort.”

Workers are split between the GMB Unions and Unite, but Mr Blasczyk said members all voted in favour of action if required.

Paul Richards, human resources director with GKN Sankey, said discussions with the unions were ongoing.
