Blog: Is democracy a dirty word in the EU?

Blog: David Cameron is planning to face down the Tory MPs – of which The Wrekin’s Mark Pritchard is in the vanguard – who are calling for a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU.

This is rank cowardice on his part. What is he scared of? As Mrs Thatcher would have said, he is frit.

The EU of today is a world away from the EEC Britain joined in a move endorsed in a 1975 referendum, in which Britons voted two-to-one in favour.

The zealots have led the way in trying to turn the Common Market into a common everything – common laws, common defence, common foreign policy, and common economic policy.

It is a dream which has been found out.

Libya? Don’t involve us, said Germany. The Eurozone has been built on foundations of clay and is in crisis. Brussels-imposed laws are an affront to national sovereignty.

Of course Britons of the 21st century should be given a chance to say whether they agree with the way things have turned out.

Or is democracy a dirty word in the EU?

It’s great to hear Mark Pritchard finally rebelling against his europhile party but why is he still a Tory MP? He’s just propping up Cameron’s EU-controlled regime.
