Blog: BBC must trim its cloth like everyone else

Blog: The BBC is a publicly-funded body which has to trim its cloth to fit the current financial squeeze, just like everybody else is doing.

There are no special favours on offer for being a great and (usually) much-loved British institution.

But it looks like regional and local services are going to take a hammering. Maybe the bosses think that these are easy targets and viewers and listeners will not mind and will not notice.

On the contrary, they are a much valued part of the corporation’s programming. And once local radio stations and local television studios lose their local flavour, there will not be much point in listening or watching – we may as well just have the content coming from London or Manchester.

First target in this round of budget cuts should be some of the waste that has been going on. Does the Beeb really need such big teams to cover major events – such as the forthcoming Olympics?

Better management and more efficiency would mean that our local services could be protected.

Or is the truth that the Beeb is losing some of its commitment to localism?

Remember that the BBc is heavily politicised and is subject to government pressure – you hit the nail on the head “Does the Beeb really need such big teams to cover major events – such as the forthcoming Olympics?” – no it doesn’t and the BBC Formula 1 coverage (world class) has already been sacrificed to pay for the olympic coverage – local services will be next and for what – an event that the majority of the population couldnt care less about
