Blog: We’d never thought about paying off debts, Dave

Blog: For a politician, there is something to be said for leaking a policy announcement or speech in advance.
If all hell breaks loose, all you need is a bit of nifty footwork to tone down the contentious parts, and all the brickbats sail past harmlessly.
David Cameron, Mister U-Turn himself, was at it again today. In his big speech at the Tory conference, he was going to urge people to pay off their credit card debts.
When ordinary people started to point out that they do not have the money to do so, and economists started to point out that if people followed DC’s advice it would stall growth, out came the speechwriter’s pen to make a few swift adjustments.
In the speech as actually delivered, the Prime Minister’s comments on the matter were neutral and unobjectionable.
As a piece of political manoeuvering to avoid trouble, it was admirable.
Changing tack so quickly does though raise a question that has been raised previously about his premiership.
What does he actually believe?
