Giantkillers in the cup but frustrating so far in the league, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

Two league games played, no victories and mixed performances from the players.

But let’s not panic just yet as it is very early days and it could take a bit of time for Town’s new-look side to start gelling together and reach high standards.

Both Town games have ended with late drama but must have left fans feeling a little frustrated.

Town had the chances to beat Plymouth at home on the first day of the season, while we never really got going in the second half against Burton.

We seem to have the side capable enough to be promotion challengers this season.

We have got strength and numbers in defence, some exciting wide players who are capable of scoring goals and some talented players in attack.

My concerns are the centre of midfield and whether the lack of experience up front will prove costly come the end of the season.

What do fans think?

Meanwhile, in the Carling Cup Town held off a second half fight-back to beat Championship side Derby by 3-2 thanks to an inspired performance by Lionel Ainsworth.

Although promotion is the priority this season, a decent cup run would be nice for fans and would give players confidence in the league.

I am sure fans will look forward to welcoming Premier League new boys Swansea in the next round where I am confident we will be able to cause another upset, especially if they play their second string team.

In the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, Town have to travel the short distance to Walsall who have had a decent start to their league campaign.

Next up for Town in the league is a tricky away trip to Oxford on Tuesday followed by a home game against Crewe.

Both teams have had slow starts to the season so Town should be looking to take full advantage.

Town need to get their first win in the league as soon as possible to get their season properly up and running and give the players and fans some confidence.

With some strong teams in the league Town cannot afford a slow start, causing them to play catch up for the rest of the season.
