Blog: Wow! What a way to touch the hearts of people just wondering what you’re like in real life. As one Canadian military wife shared her concerns for her husband with another young wife, she was unprepared for the reply, writes Shirley Tart.

Kate said: “Yes, I always worry about William when he goes off on a mission. But my job is to support my husband.”

The Duchess of Cambridge added: “You always fear for them, not knowing if something is going to happen and it can be very hard.”

Prince William is a search and rescue helicopter pilot at RAF Valley in Anglesey after training at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire, a risky profession indeed.

Even as a new bride, his wife, the lovely Catherine, totally understands the risks of servicemen and women and the concerns and fears of their loved ones.

It was always clear that the new royal darlings would go down a storm in Canada.

But the classy young Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have wowed them beyond what we – and the Royal Family – could have hoped for.

Not just because people like to get pally with the royals, either, but because they have been themselves, two exceptionally nice, warm and caring human beings.

Forget Catherine’s fashion choice, which as it happens has been excellent and carefully included the colours and icons of Canada.

What has drawn crowds to them has been the obvious pleasure in being there, the togetherness, how they share little confidences and how he reassures her, as well as the manner in which they have responded to, and clicked with, everyone they have met so far during the visit.

Both have taken time to meet a terminally ill man who had struggled out just to see them, for instance.

The way William made that moving little speech about Canada being close to their hearts and paid tribute to his wife’s grandfather who had also loved the country.

And honouring Canada’s war dead as they laid a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior.

Yes, there have been some protests by anti-monarchists, democracy at work after all.

But by far the greatest response to their first overseas tour together has been of welcome and warmth.

And the young couple have reciprocated this with interest.

William in particular, would also have had some mixed feelings on what would have been his mother’s 50th birthday but she, in turn, would have been so proud of her eldest son.

The rest of their time looks set to be just as successful, though who knows how good old Hollywood will react when they arrive there?

Apart from over the top, that is.

But they will take it in their stride and carry on doing what they are quickly proving to be so good at – doing a grand job for Britain.
