Blog: Shrewsbury Riverside is evolving without Mr Darwin

Blog: Poor Charlie Darwin, writes David Burrows.

I have, on previous occasions in these pages, bemoaned how little Shrewsbury seems to care about its most famous son. A statue outside the library, a couple of odd looking sculptures and a shopping centre. That’s it.

Or, at least that WAS it. Now he can’t even get a mall (as those rich beautiful people on those E4 shows call them) named after him.

Nope, it seems that when the town’s three shopping centres are, at long last, merged to create one giant supermall, they will be called the New Riverside.

Which is a shame. Not least of all because it sounds like a football stadium in the North East. It is a shame that Darwin will disappear from the name in a tenuous attempt to make the most of the River Severn.

But, that aside, what wonderful news that the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside are finally to become one. It warms my heart. It’s like the last episode of Friends when Ross and Rachel finally get together. We’ve all been waiting for it. We all knew it would happen eventually. We just couldn’t wait to find out how.

The New Riverside (I’m hoping that, like Shrewsbury Town’s New Meadow before it, this name ends up being dropped. Although not in favour of the Prostar Shopping Centre) will have a new department store and up to 60 more shops and restaurants.

Shopping centre bosses say the move will make Shrewsbury a more attractive place to shop and visit.

But don’t get too excited. The new look centre won’t open until autumn 2015 at the earliest.

But, as has also been pointed out in these pages before now, Shrewsbury needs to do something to fight back against the increasing influence of out-of-town supermarkets. Having a one-stop shopping centre with more choice and more places to eat and drink can only be a step in the right direction.

We now have to hope that, in conjunction with this, our friends and the council ensure there is enough parking (at a price people are prepared to pay). They must also ensure these shops and eateries are allowed to stay open beyond the oh-so-last-century 5.30pm closing that Shrewsbury is obsessed by. Allowing them to open later will allow greater fluidity into the town’s night-time economy.

Of course, there will be certain sections of society who will rail against such a notion, but it would nice to think the powers that be would have the strength of mind to overrule the vocal minority for the good of the town.

Are they still connecting them by building up behind McDonalds?
A few years back they said they were to build on the old car park site with the first 2/3 stories being some sort of nightclub and the upper level just being a link between the two Centres. It was also planned to completely wipe out Riverside.
Are any sort of plans on view yet?

Plans will be exhibited 14-16 July on the Upper Mall in the Darwin centre. A website will also be published for the plans to be viewed and commented on!

@Burrows: It’s your second blog entry talking sense on the development. Thank you! And I’m sure you represent the silent majority..

Talking sense in your opinion Sam, let’s not take for granted the views of the entire populous just yet. By all means address the site but a hasty rush to expand and overdevelop will not do any favours for the towns traffic& parking problems not to mention the countless empty units and issues faced by existing shops. Thorntons will soon vacate the heritage building on Pride Hill, Jane Norman has closed opposite, not to mention live easy in St Marys and the empty units in Castle Street. Thankfully Cotswold has opened and the Apple store is not far behind. So perhaps let’s fill our town core before expanding out.

Well, as from 17th July this year I understand there will be no Arriva Sunday bus service from Hanley to Shrewsbury via Market Drayton so that’s one day a week less incentive for people to come to Shrewsbury to avoid parking fees. There is no railway alternative on this route!

Maybe by the time, if ever, this development happens the Council will have come to its senses over parking charges & removing concessionary bus pass travel on the Park n Rides.

I read this week Swansea Council is, in response to local Traders requests, reducing its city centre parking charges to £1 for 4 hours to help rejuvenate the town centre as a shopping destination.

The name is very mmm 60/70′s and not very imaginative. The town will not be able to sustain all the extra shops/eateries that will open, with out it being detrimental to the shops etc already in Shrewsbury.Yes the close at 5-30pm may be an issue for some but to be honest shops are open 7 days a week, as with my argument against Sunday opening the majority in favor OF LATE NIGHT AND SUNDAY SHOPPING are the first ones to complain when they are asked to work those hours in their area of work .

Poor old Wilkinsons, they have just spent mega bucks refurbishing their store only to have it bulldozed in the next couple of years. With the demise of TJ Hughes a big gap appears, where are all these stores coming from?
