Blog: More power to Shrewsbury’s festivals
Monday 11th April 2011, 8:00AM BST.
Ooh I love a good festival, says David Burrows.
And maybe, just maybe, Shrewsbury is becoming grand festival central.
The other week we had confirmation that the frankly wonderful street theatre festival would return, despite upsetting some traders last year (even though it apparently brought £1.7 million into the local economy).
Then came the news that a festival to celebrate the River Severn may be revived after six years. Mucking about on the river – what could be finer?
Any regular readers of my column will know that I’m a big advocate of bringing the river into wider use. It is the most underused asset our beautiful town has.
Now there could be steam boats, river rides and a coracle race. What larks. It’s like something out of the Famous Five.
Officials need £15,000 to ensure the event can go ahead next year. Surely there are enough groups out there that can see the benefits of it and will want to support it financially? I’ll pledge now to get a Shropshire Newspapers team involved in the coracle racing if it is a team event (I’m not making a fool of myself on my own. Again. Anyone who saw me in C21 on Saturday night – I apologise).
If you need evidence that Shrewsbury has the appetite for festivals, just look at the announcement last week from the lovely people at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival.
They had already sold 90 per cent of tickets for the four-day music extravaganza – a move which they called “unprecedented”. Never known the likes.
The festival is clearly moving from a nice little event to one of the hottest tickets in the county.
And this is what Shrewsbury should be all about. As patronising as it may sound, we have a pretty town and, let’s be honest, a quaint county.
Shrewsbury’s a great place for street theatre. A great place for a river festival. A great place for four-days of folk fun and frolics.
Vive la revolution (as nobody in any country on the Continent ever said). More power to all your elbows.

I’ll be at Shrewsbury Folk Fest again but it’s a very unadventurous line-up this year and I can’t help feeling that i’ve been to this already over the last 4 years.
