It’s…William…Shatner’s 80th. Birthday.

Blog: Today, March 22, is the…Eightieth birthday…Of a true…Acting. Legend.
I wanted to be William Shatner when I was a kid – well, actually I wanted to be Captain Kirk, but I don’t suppose there’s any difference in most people’s minds. William Shatner might as well be James T. Kirk as far as most people are concerned.
He’s one of those actors who will forever be associated with one role, no matter how many other parts he plays.
I wonder if he finds that irksome. After all, this is a man of range and depth. His other roles, such as T.J. Hooker, are a million miles from the Starship Enterprise.
And yet, over the years, Shatner has taken umpteen jokes about his acting ability on the chin. He knows how to laugh at himself, which is a good thing in a world where most celebs taken themselves somewhat too seriously.
Growing up, watching BBC2 reruns of the young Shatner patrolling the universe and getting off with just about anything female with a pulse, my 11-year-old self thought he wasn’t a bad role model. ‘Yes,’ I thought to myself, ‘I want to be just like Captain Kirk.’
And now, as an adult, I look at William Shatner, still going strong, still loving life and still working hard at 80, and I think to myself, ‘Yes, that’s not a bad example to follow.’
So. Happy. Birthday, Captain. Live longer, and keep prospering.
