Burrows about Town – my troubles pale into insignificance
Monday 7th March 2011, 2:35PM GMT.
Blog: As a lifelong Shrewsbury Town fan, I’ve been through many lows and, sadly, fewer highs. I’ve chased along the terraces after dodgy referees, much to the disgust of my then-girlfriend (can’t imagine why she dumped me) and been threatened with being kicked out of the ground for swearing (yes, at a football match).
But whatever I have been through is nothing on the trials and tribulations of Shrews supporter Mark Peters.
Mark, having clearly taken leave of his senses, decided that this season he would CYCLE to every away game.
Now I cycle to as many home games as I can and even the short ride from my riverside apartment (okay, flat in Belle Vue) leaves me just like my bike (too tired. Two tyred? No? No.)
Mark has suffered a bit more than me. He’s nearly died. Twice.
In September, just yards from Gillingham’s ground, Mark collapsed. I’ve been to Gillingham. It has that effect on me, too. Mark was dehydrated, To cap it off, Shrewsbury lost 2-0.
Last month Paul rode to Rotherham. Paul had to be rescued from a mountain.
For those of you who don’t follow Shrewsbury, the game was called off. Because it had snowed. Quite a lot.
Paul’s lips had turned blue and rescuers told him he was just half-an-hour from hypothermia setting in. He’ll have to go back at the end of the month for the rearranged game.
He has also been arrested and fined after a hair-raising row over entry to Barnet’s ground (hair-raising. Barnet, you see? I give up).
But Paul doesn’t mind. Not because he’s a nutter (though I still suspect he is) but because all that publicity has led to a reunion with his son Ryan, whom he has not seen for 18 years.
Happy enough news, you would think. But that reunion also led to the revelation that Mark is a grandad to a six-month old baby girl.
Mark is raising money for the National Autistic Society after his other son Jake, 15, was diagnosed with the condition two years ago. After what he’s been through he deserves as much support as possible. If he was American, he’d've been on Oprah and they’d be making a film about him.
As it is, the lucky so and so gets to star in my column.
As if he hasn’t suffered enough.
