Blog: Who will design Kate Middleton’s royal wedding dress?
Monday 7th March 2011, 2:18PM GMT.
Blog: In many ways, it would be an inspired choice.
Although leading British fashion house Alexander McQueen swiftly denied a claim that they had clinched the coup of the year – designing the wedding gown for one Catherine Middleton when she marries her prince – it would be a perfect match.
Feverish speculation suggested that the dress would be designed by the company’s new creative director, Sarah Burton.
And after the sad death of McQueen himself last year, it would also be a fine tribute to a cutting edge designer whose successors are proving just as flamboyant – in a way traditionalists will also accept – and very interesting.
And if Sarah Burton does get the order, it will be an interesting relationship between her and is a royal bride-to-be who is already known for playing things safe.
And although the British designer has chalked up just one catwalk collection so far, she is widely seen as a star in the fashion ascendency.
So if she is chosen to dress the bride for the premier occasion – and TV audiences of billions – what a boost for British fashion that would also be.
As indeed it was back in 1981 when Diana Spencer chose husband and wife team, David and Elizabeth Emmanuel to create her dress. And that stunning, oyster silk extravaganza is still talked about.
Catherine – as she must now be known – is likely to choose something perhaps not quite so full-blown, she is older, her style is different but you can bet with her natural beauty, she will be just as stunning a bride.
We still don’t know just who will dress her. And certainly royals and celebrities who are on the top guest list, have been seen over the past few weeks frequenting other salons, notably Bruce Oldfield. But somehow it feels a bit unlikely, popular creator though he is, that Oldfield will also have the bride’s order in his book.
Sarah Burton is a relatively young and new designer and might be seen by some as a controversial choice, but her fashion is imaginative and just edgy enough. It comes complete with the ‘wow’ factor while shunning anything which could be remotely labelled ridiculous.
Indeed her designs very much look to luxury and turn heads in admiration rather than startled amazement.
If she and her team are even now feverishly planning the gown of the year, you can bet that Sarah Burton has something quite sensationally beautiful in her head to befit a new princess.
If not? Well we’re all watching the space!

There is a rather interesting story about the royals developing at the moment and this certainly isn’t it? Is there any chance at all of Ms Tart offering her wisdom re Prince Andrew’s activities?

Shouldn’t be a question mark after that first sentence of course. It’s meant to be very much an assertion!
