Blog – ‘Posh’ royal wedding but Beckhams not the first

You would think that no celebrity had ever been invited to a royal wedding before, writes Shirley Tart. But while the Beckhams may trail blaze in many things, not in this one.
For instance, back in 1973 guests watching Princess Anne walk down the aisle of Westminster Abbey included the Hollywood dream, former actress Grace Kelly who by then was Princess Grace of Monaco, believe me – a global icon.
When Charles married Di it was a State occasion (which this year’s wedding is not) and as many big names as could be squeezed in to the more roomy St Paul’s Cathedral (3,500 to the Abbey’s 2000) were indeed, squeezed in.
Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson invited the comic list of its day with the likes of Billy Connolly having a prime spot.
Prince Edward wisely moved his nuptials to Windsor but still drew well known pals from the acting world he so enjoyed and so on and so forth.
All these great occasions see invitations going to representatives of all walks of life and so William and Kate have invited not only royals and Middletons but politicians, those from popular culture (the Beckhams), diplomats, members of the armed forces home from Afghanistan and many from charities and causes William supports.
And how very nice that they’ve firmly said no presents but instead will gratefully take any donations towards those said charities.
And incidentally, in the modern way, David and Posh are pretty friendly with the royal couple – especially since the prince’s FA connections.
So have a good one all those on the list. Get a new telly those who are not!
