Blog – Unwelcome break for Shrewsbury Town-
Monday 21st February 2011, 3:48PM GMT.
Saturday’s postponement couldn’t have come at a worse time for an in-form Town side, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
With four wins in a row and confidence high in the Town camp, I am sure fans would have been looking forward to get one over on their promotion rivals Rotherham.
But a waterlogged pitch put paid to any chance of that meaning Town will have to wait another week before continuing their promotion push.
My fear is that Town’s momentum will have been lost by the time their next game comes around on Saturday.
When you’re out of form and confidence is low a two-week break can do teams wonders, but when you are playing well and got yourself in a fine winning run, the last thing players want is a break.
Despite not playing at the weekend Town still find themselves in an impressive second place after Bury and Wycombe dropped points.
With an eight point lead it’s looking more and more likely Chesterfield are going to be good value to win the league, so the best Town can hope for is an automatic promotion place.
As long as we can keep our momentum going and continue our fine run of form there is no reason why we can’t achieve this.
Despite my fears of loss of momentum, Town should at least be refreshed as they prepare to face another one of their promotion rivals this weekend.
The home game with Gillingham will be very tough as the opposition have already won four league games on the road this season and have been involved in some high-scoring games.
In the reverse fixture in September Town lost 2-0 so the players should be looking to gain some revenge over their rivals.
