Blog: Shrewsbury and the FA Cup. So, that’s that then…

Blog: Forget about the cup competitions as there is plenty to play for in the league, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
In a mixed week for Town, an impressive away 2-1 away victory at Crewe in the league was followed by late heartbreak in the FA Cup at Southampton.
Town can take a lot of credit from their performance at Southampton and were within minutes of a well-deserved replay.
It was good to see Turner taking the competition seriously by fielding a very strong side. On another day, with a bit of luck, we could have snatched a win.
Of course a run in the cup featuring some high profile matches against Premiership opposition would have been nice, but promotion has always been our number one priority this season and this is what we need to put all our attention into achieving.
Realistically we had no chance of winning the competition and now that we are out it means players can get a decent amount of rest between league matches in what is a very long season.
In midweek Town ended their poor run away in the league with a deserved victory against local rivals Crewe. We could even afford to miss a penalty and hit the woodwork.
Hopefully we can build on this, pick up more points away and enhance our position in the league.
Would fans have swapped victory at Crewe with defeat at Southampton?
A quick word on Mark Wright who is very quickly becoming one of our key players this season with his goals, pace and creativity. Turner needs to move quickly to get him to stay longer as he is vital to our chances of achieving promotion.
In transfer news Turner moved quickly to ease our defensive injury crisis by signing Exodus Geohaghon on loan from Peterborough. He will add commanding presence at the back as well as some strength to the squad.
On Saturday Town hit the road once again with a game at Stevenage, who sit just outside the play-offs and who can be proud of their efforts so far this season.
It will be a tough game as Stevenage have only lost one league home game this season. But Town can take confidence from their last league outing and the fact that Stevenage don’t score many goals.
