Town’s impressive home form continues to keep them breathing down the neck of League Two’s high-flyers, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

A familiar pattern is forming at the moment – a Town home win followed by a defeat away.

Despite being predictable, Town sit in an impressive fourth position and just five points off league-leaders Chesterfield.

In the end Town made hard work of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Barnet in a game which was marred by injuries to Raven and Sharps.

A few weeks ago I called on the midfield to start contributing more goals and Disley has joined Wright in doing this  – and thus taken the pressure off the strikers.

At the moment the players are thriving at playing in front of their home fans, but need to mentally overcome the challenge of playing away and being out of their comfort zone.

There is enough pace in our team to be patient away, soak up the pressure of the opposition and attack teams on the break.

With there being no concerns with Town’s home form at the moment, attentions now turn to games on the road, starting with a tricky local derby at Crewe tomorrow.

Crewe have had a mixed season to date, sitting just outside the play-offs and being involved in some high-scoring games.

Town will need to be at their best defensively as Crewe have scored 18 goals in seven league home games, but they will also be encourage by the fact that Crewe are vulnerable at the back.

League Two takes a break this Saturday with attention turning to the FA Cup. Town face a very tricky tie away at Southampton who sit in mid-table in League One.

Town haven’t had much joy in the cup competitions so far this season, although we have pulled off some impressive victories against higher opposition.

It would be nice for fans if Town can put together a decent run in the FA Cup, featuring a couple of matches against high-profile opposition.

How can you write that we’ve not had much joy in cup competitions this season?!?! Apart from coming from 3-0 down to beat higher division opposition in the league cup and beating higher league Oldham away from home that is!!

Compared to many recent seasons and the usual first round exits it’s been one of the most ‘joyous’ for a long time!!
