Blog: Shrewsbury Town’s dismal form threatens promotion

Blog: Town’s dismal away form continues to threaten their chances of promotion, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
If Town think they can rely on picking up points at home this season and not worry about their away form then they can kiss their chances of promotion goodbye for this season.
Saturday’s 4-3 defeat at the hands of table-toppers Chesterfield means we have not won away from home in the league since the 4-0 defeat of Stockport in August.
It is simply not good enough and we need to learn to be tighter at the back, cut out silly mistakes and keep more clean sheets.
On a more positive note we have had some very difficult away games recently, we showed a great temperament to almost snatch a draw after trailing 4-0, and it is no mean feat to put three goals past the league leaders away from home.
It is easy to blame the defence for conceding goals, but I do think we need another quality centre half and someone who can sit deep in midfield and protect the back four. Any suggestions?
I do worry about this season because at the moment we are not providing much evidence that we can compete with the best teams in the division. What does that say about us?
In transfer news, after missing out on Calvin Zola the manager has moved swiftly to sign forward Temitope Obadeyi on loan from Bolton.
I think he will be an excellent addition to our squad and will provide competition for our forwards. He is very young and is not the best finisher, but he has got a lot of pace and has experience at playing in the lower leagues.
What do fans think of the signing?
With Town continuing to struggle on the road it is vital we continue to take advantage of playing at home and collect maximum points to ensure we don’t slide down the table any further.
Next up for Town is a very winnable home game on Saturday against struggling Barnet who have yet to win away and have shipped in 18 goals in six games on the road.

Sorry but it is too ealry to tell if we can gain promotion and you can’t expect to go and win every match at home or away, it is just not going to happen! And even though we lost 4-3 it is not a disaster! And remember Chesterfield are top of the league! so they are playing with confidence and beating most teams! (They are first for a reason!)So with having title’s like this one and already blowing away promotion hopes, I think most fans need to just hope of winning the next match to start with before getting all pessimistic and already blowing away our promotion chances! One it is very negative and that will only effect the players, and two it is a very long season so lets see where we are by Christmas first!!
