Telly Talk: Merlin’s on Saturday nights. Oh yes he is.

BBC One’s Saturday night sword and sorcery, somethingtowatchwhilewaitingforthenewseriesofDoctorWho, adventure series Merlin continues to fail to live up to expectations.

Trying desperately to succeed where Robin Hood failed, the big budget series appears not to know what its purpose is.

At its best when focusing on the machinations of the evil Morgana, the show falls flat as soon as it has to come up with a storyline that doesn’t involve her.

Take this weekend, for example. A join the dots story which had Prince Arthur facing a forced marriage out of a sense of duty. The princess in question was, naturally, possessed by an evil faerie (I think I dated her sister).

So far, so routine. But then Merlin fell into its own trap.

The writers obviously realised the subject matter was, shall we say, a little too fanciful even for a show full of fancy and that the low budget SFX weren’t going to cut it (don’t even get me started on the pixie’s prosthetic nose). So they went for the comedy jugular. Only to then decide that perhaps it should be serious adventure stuff after all.

The problem with the “comedy” was that it was so pantomime it was untrue. Helped, of course, with obligatory comedy soundtrack (yes, even including a tuba) in case you didn’t get that this was the comic relief.

It was painful.

The “jokes” included the fact that the princess, because she was possessed, had a problem with wind. Aside from the fact that fart gags really aren’t ALWAYS funny, this is something they nicked from Doctor Who’s Slitheen.

And on the subject of theft, if you thought you recognised the princess’s nanny before it’s because she was a carbon copy of Nursie from Blackadder II.

It wasn’t all bad. The focus on the love that cannot be between Arthur and Guinevere makes for nice human drama, yet was pushed aside here despite it being the perfect chance to explore it further.

Merlin needs to realise that what a family wants at teatime on a Saturday is rip-roaring fantasy adventure.

Pantomime is for Christmas.

I heartily disagree with this review. You seem to be expecting Shakespeare from a swords and sorcery show. If you personally don’t enjoy this genre that is fine but giving it a bad review because it isn’t your cup of tea is unprofessional. Merlin is an “all ages” fantasy that has gained fans in countries all over the world. It appeals to the same audiences that enjoied Xena and Hercules and the much loved Robin of Sherwood. Merlin features an incredible soundtrack by Rob Lane and a solid cast featuring veterans Anthony Head and Richard Wilson. Relative newcommer Colin Morgan plays the title role with maturity beyond his years, handeling comedy and drama with equal skill. The remainder of the young cast are extreemely competant, attractive and believable in their roles. There are few to no examples of bad acting to be seen on this show. The decision to forgo historical accuracy was a deliberate choice on the part of the producers who have instead gone with a Pre-Raphaelite version of Camelot complete with 60 foot tall talking dragon. As with every television show ever made, some episodes are better than others. The prosthetic makeup used in some episodes can not always said to be highly realistic but is no worse and for the most part better than that seen for years on the Star Trek television series. If you are a fan of Action Adventure Fantasy series give this one a try.

I agree with the reviewer. The show loses it’s appeal and becomes on joke when the episodes are like this one. These silly episode fillers are an insult to the show. It was funny back in season one, but the audience have matured since than (i.e. see Harry Potter series, how it grows with each movie). They need to move forward with this show. Someone needs to find out about Merlin’s magic because it’s being too drawn out. I have been watching this show since it first started and it has evolved so little. The show needs to figure out who it wants to be directed for. I much prefer Merlin when it takes a more serious and mature tone.
