Blog: New hosts would be welcome on Daybreak
Friday 15th October 2010, 10:04AM BST.
It has looked a tight squeeze on that sofa since day one but it seems room on the far from comfy-looking Daybreak hotseat could be running out for Christine Bleakley, asks Tracey O’Sullivan.
Reports this week suggest she could be out on her fake tan by Christmas.
Not quite the festive season she was hoping for I’m sure but an early gift for viewers who are refusing to take the pushy presenter from Northern Ireland and her grumpy-faced co-host to their hearts.
In the first few weeks it was fine for bosses to claim the new format and its team needed time to settle in and find their way.
But now as we edge towards two months of Daybreak there’s no sign that people are going to warm to wannabe WAG Christine and Adrian Chiles.
In fact it’s the opposite with more and more viewers deserting ITV1 in their droves.
Viewing figures have dropped to half of that enjoyed by the BBC and yes their move to Salford could have an impact but ITV can’t turn a deaf ear to those not tuning in for much longer.
I’d hazard a guess the supposed dream pairing for the morning show could be pulled asunder even sooner than Christmas.
Christine may cling on a little longer – she has a contract for prime time shows and it’s difficult to think where else ITV could place her.
Rumours were rife yesterday she may head over to X-Factor. Now that would be an even bigger catastrophe than giving her the Daybreak slot.
Dermot O’Leary is doing a fabulous job on the talent search and Christine on a Saturday night? Do us a favour.
Although she and Cheryl Cole could engage in the odd battle of “I’ve been tangoed more than you have” which may provide audiences with oh let’s say 30 seconds of amusement.
No, it’s a struggle to think what ITV would do with their prize signing.
But Adrian has ITV’s sports coverage in his contract and it’s the perfect place for him so he may well give up on trying to please the AM crowd long before Miss Bleakley.
He did ditch the BBC after they brought in Chris Evans to present the Friday night One Show so you have to wonder how his ego is taking to the relatively unknown Dan Lobb proving more popular when he steps in for him on the sofa.
And couldn’t we see more of the sharply-dressed Dan – if just for his sense of style alone.
I cannot, and I mean cannot, stand Chiles’s scruffy turn-outs in the morning – just because it’s 5am doesn’t mean he has to dress in the dark.
It was ill-fitting jean-like trousers the other morning and a host of bland same colour shirts all week while Dan has given us bright patterns and a particularly striking striped shirt this morning. Loving that man’s wardrobe.
Come on – let’s hope Christmas really does come early this year.

It sounds as though nothing has changed in the 10 tears I’ve been In Greece. Even that long ago I always found breakfast TV utterly mind numbing. D rated presenters interviewing E rated guests does not equal entertainment.
The TV companies are allowed to broadcast at that time, so they do, with any old rubbish they can concoct, I recall that dreadful Wincey Willis presenting the weather, absolutely diabolical, but, at least she was on a par with the rest of the instantly forgettable crew.
Can nobody in TV these days come up with something that people can watch, and don’t get me started on “Corrie” and Eastenders, ye gods.
